Trend of Internet Media Report for Mental Health and Suicide

Abstract
Objectives£º The purpose of this study was to analyse the trend and perspectives of internet news on the issues of mental health, mental illness and suicide.

Methods£º The total 1,495 internet news were collected from 1 March to 30 September with four key words ; mental health, mental illness, depression and suicide. We categorized them into 7 domains and 8 mental health problems. And we categorized the internet news with the perspectives of positive, neutral and negative. According to the media guideline for suicide event, we investigated whether the news followed the guidelines or not.

Results£ºThe news about suicide issue was most common(607 news, 40.6%) and followed by depression(310 news, 16.0%). 21% of internet news dealt with medical informations and social activities related to mental health. Of all the searched news, 247 reports(16.5%) were categorized as positive perspectives and 385(23.9%) were as negative. Many reports about medical information were categorized as positive perspectives(82.2%). 93% of negative perspectives was attributable to report about accident and 97% of accident was related to suicide. Among 369 news which reported suicide accident, 89.7% of news violated media guideline "Media should not describe suicide victim¡¯s personal information, suicide method and site in detail", and 68% of news violated the guideline "Media should not remark suicide motive conclusively without enough information".

Conclusion£º It is necessary to develop effective monitoring system for media report on mental health issues includ-ing suicide. Furthermore, we need to establish active strategy for changing attitude of mass media and general public.
